Minouche loves...DOT DOT

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the beautiful images from DOT DOT for their recently released campaign – their swimwear range for little girls is simply stunning!

I was so excited to discover that DOT DOT’s creator, Samantha Otter, lives just a few minutes from me.

We met up for a coffee and a chat and I was able to find out a little bit more about Samantha and her adorable brand.

What’s your background story?

I’m a mother to two adorable savages, Jack – five, and Taylor – three. I grew up in the Sutherland Shire (South of Sydney), have lived in the UK and various parts of Sydney, but eventually found myself back in the Shire after re-meeting my now husband at our ten-year high school reunion.

I’ve recently given up the corporate world to create DOT DOT, a swimwear brand exclusively for little girls aged 1-5 years.

What inspired you to start DOT DOT?

DOT DOT was inspired by my daughter, Taylor (AKA Dot Dot) and was born out of a simple ideal – to let little girls be just that, little.

Given the abundance of Australian swimwear brands, I was surprised how hard it was to find quality swimwear that wasn’t either overly cutesy or too mature for my (then) one-year old. It felt like there was a lack of classic swimwear specifically for girls under the age of five, so I decided to create my own.

Tell us a little bit more about your current collection...

With so many cherished memories made by the water, I wanted to create swimwear that would stand the test of time, both in quality and aesthetic, that mothers would look back on and love in years to come, just as they do today.

This collection puts a child’s natural beauty as the focal point, with subtle colours, understated prints and feminine details that complements their delicate features.

Ruffle Two-Piece: Bandeau-style top has generous coverage to prevent riding up and mid-rise bottoms add a touch of vintage while helping to conceal nappies in smaller sizes.

One-Piece Peplum: Halter style ties at the neck for the perfect fit and a delicate peplum provides just the right amount of flounce.

One-Piece Frill: A sporty front, softened with frills cascading all the way down the back and meeting with a delicate bow.

Sunsuit: An elegant approach to sun safety. A slim fitting sunsuit with ¾ sleeves, high waistband and bow detail on the back.

Where do you see DOT DOT this time next year?

At this stage I’m just taking it one day at a time. I’ve created something that I love and that I hope people will love in return. If I can achieve that, I’ll be over the moon! I’ve had a lot of people asking me to make larger sizes so that’s something I’ll consider.

What are your influences?

My taste is fairly eclectic, but over all I’m quite old-fashioned – particularly regarding music and fashion. I just think there was something so feminine and classy in the way women used to dress!

My mum was also very feminine and used to put my sister and I in the most beautiful dresses - I wish I could put Taylor in them today! She died nearly 7 years ago so I like to think it’s her influence coming through.

Where is your favourite place to go in Sydney?

If it’s with the kids – it’ll involve a beach and a playground/park. Anywhere around South Cronulla is a favourite! If it’s without the kids, I’m fairly partial to a long lunch at Finger Wharf, Watsons Bay Hotel or a few vinos in the sun at Cronulla Sailing Club on a Friday afternoon!

And finally…what are 5 things you cant live without?

  1. My family
  2. My bed
  3. Music
  4. Laughter
  5. Wine
